"Quit Your Sobbing & Call Me In The Morning"
Here are some pics from the Anthony Lister show @ New Image Art Gallery which I must say was nothing short of lackluster. Not to say the work was sub par, the work itself was great (what little there was of it) just that there were only 4 significant pieces that you could actually get a decent view of. There were the masks too I guess & a really cool installation in the project room only that it was blocked off with an opening that you could barely see through (a bit pretentious if one were to ask me which they didn't). Actually there were a lot of pieces in the project room but you couldn't see them. I don't know, Lister's work was great. I really like New Image & the artists that show there for the most part but it seems to me like they have so much going on all over the world in larger galleries that they never really go all out when showing there. LA is a tired scene in general. Dunno, I could be wrong or maybe just have higher expectations from some of the biggest names in the biz...
FYI, drips aren't played out if you're a good artist.
I did however take home some scraps from the Swoon installation that were lying in the dump out back that I found while drinking a beer by myself, pondering the ridiculousness of art & the gallery's role as 50/50 pimp. On a side note, do you realize that galleries actually make more money than the artist? Even in a 50/50 split which is pretty standard the cost of materials and time is never figured into the equation so while the sale price is being split even the artist still has to recoup overhead costs before a profit is ever made. But then again, the gallery does spring for the 1000 or so flyers which cost what, $200 at most & even then I'm sure they have a deal worked out with somebody on that too. Needless to say, fuck trying to "make it" as an artist, I think it's time that I open a gallery...
Sweet ass camera phone pics by yours truly. I'm beginning to care less & less about what rich people are doing with their money...
